Recently, on a Sunday morning, I volunteered with a friend to serve breakfast at the Seattle Emergency Services center which is off of James St and 2nd Ave. It is a place where homeless people spend the night and before they leave, they are fed breakfast .
We served breakfast to 130 people which is an average number of people there on any given morning .
My friend had sent out a sign up sheet in advance for folks to volunteer to cook. I signed up to make Aloo(potato) subzi for 60 people and cooked the meal the night before on Sat Jan 22. My husband
and I signed up to serve the breakfast as well. We reached the venue at 7:30am and reheated the food in the commercial warmers. There were about 10 volunteers who set up the assembly line of food, and plates, cutlery, napkin etc. At 8:30Am the breakfast serving started and we served till 9:30AM. About 130 people were at the shelter that morning and all of them were served a hearty South Indian breakfast. They loved the Banana Lassi(yogurt smoothie) and the Upma.
We have made the intention to do this Seva once a quarter.
